Soon Sun City Carolina residents can ride their Golf carts to the nearby grocery store!

Charlotte's RED (Real Estate Development) Partners has started work on Carolina Commons, a 180,000-square-foot center adjoining the 1,200-acre-plus active adult community on U.S. 521 in Indian Land, S.C.

By early next year, residents of Sun City Carolina Lakes near Charlotte will be able to drive a golf cart to a supermarket, a drugstore, a bank, a restaurant and medical services.

Harris Teeter will anchor the retail portion with a 53,000-square-foot grocery. Other signed tenants are CVS, BB&T and Wendy's.

Presbyterian Healthcare will occupy 40,000 square feet of a 60,000-square-foot multi-tenant medical office building.

The developer bought its 25-acre site from Pulte Homes, which is developing the Del Webb community of up to 3,400 homes for buyers over age 55.

The residential project was designed with golf-cart lanes on major traffic arteries and parking spaces especially for carting homeowners.

The developer worked with Pulte on providing golf cart access and parking spaces in the center and coordinating the architectural design of Carolina Commons.

They see the center as an amenity to residents, who won't have to venture onto U.S. 521 for basic consumer services.

About a third of Sun City  planned homes have been completed and about 1,100 people live there.

Carolina Commons also is providing golf cart access though the center to a public library, under construction on two acres donated by Pulte.

The main entrance off U.S. 521 to Carolina Commons will be on Jim Wilson Road, across from Crosland LLC's planned 142-acre Cornerstone shopping and medical office complex.

Planners anticipate more commercial and residential growth in fast-growing Lancaster panhandle because of it proximity to Ballantyne in south Charlotte and Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.

S.C. officials estimated that Sun City -- about 8.5 miles south of Ballantyne -- will add about 6,000 residents to the county.
