IKEA is breaking Ground in Charlotte!

IKEA, the Swedish home furnishings giant broke ground for its new Charlotte store Wednesday, paving the way for a spring 2009 grand opening.

On City Boulevard, next to Interstate 85, the 356,000-square-foot store will be the first in the Carolinas and the 36th nationwide. It's expected to employ about 400 people.

Customers can expect more than 10,000 affordably priced, exclusively designed home goods, a supervised children's play area and a 300-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties.

That combination is expected to draw shoppers from across the Carolinas and southern Virginia. Though the closest store is in Atlanta, the company says it already has 150,000 Carolinas customers; IKEA has long operated in the northeast and in California.

Work has begun on the 25-acre site, and construction equipment bustles around the expanse of grass and red dirt.

The IKEA will be the centerpiece of Crescent Properties' 175-acre Belgate mixed-use development. Other retail, including a Wal-Mart Supercenter, is also set to spring up nearby.

Top 10 Best Cities for Home Sellers!

Four factors are widely seen as affecting whether a housing market is a good one for sellers: job growth, amount of new construction, vacancy rates, and credit availability.

Forbes magazine used a variety of resources to determine how the country’s 40 largest metro areas fared according to these measures. The result is this list of top 10 cities for sellers.

San Jose, Calif. Because of a tough regulatory environment, new home construction dropped 63 percent last year.

San Francisco. When the conforming loan limit recently jumped from $417,000 to the maximum $729,750 made credit much easier to get for many of the city’s homebuyers.

Salt Lake City. The 3 percent annual job growth rate, paired with a declining inventory of existing homes and one of the nation’s sharpest declines in construction made this market a good one for sellers.

Austin, Texas. Texas is very affordable, plus the city has the nation’s fastest job growth at 4.1 percent.

Kansas City, Mo.: The number of unsold, vacant houses dropped by 40 percent last year.

San Antonio, Texas. Jobs are growing by 3 percent and construction starts have dropped by 42 percent.

Denver. The 49 percent drop in construction starts paired with the 2 percent rise in new jobs are good news for sellers.

Providence, R.I. Vacancy rates at 1.6 percent combined with a 42 percent cut in inventory help sellers.

Charlotte, N.C. Moderate prices and strong job growth bode well for sellers.

Seattle, Wash. Strong job growth and a 42 percent decrease in new home construction are good news for sellers.

The Housing Market looks grim, except Charlotte and New York

The housing market seems overall gloomy, but just how well or poorly the real estate market is performing varies widely city to city – with some areas showing gains or remaining fairly stable, according to a new report released today by Radar Logic, a New York-based real estate data and analytics company.

Twenty-one of the 25 U.S. metro markets that Radar Logic tracks showed price decreases, indicating a general softness in the U.S. housing market.

The company’s RPX Monthly Housing Market Report found that for January the change in price per square foot for properties sold varied widely – ranging from gains of 3.9% and 2% in Charlotte, N.C., and New York, respectively, to losses of 25.4% and 27.8% in Las Vegas and Sacramento, Calif. Two metro areas – Milwaukee, and Philadelphia, showed little or no change. Washington, D.C., and Seattle, which had been showing year-over-year appreciation in other months, showed depreciation in January. See Chart

Charlotte voted #8 Best Place to Live and Launch a Business

Voted by CNN Money: 8th Place Charlotte NC

Population: 596,123

Pros: Steady influx of young educated workers, business-friendly banking community, local sports entertainment

Con: Housing costs spiked in recent years

This national financial hub is home to big names like Wachovia and Bank of America, but the oak-tree-lined city is also a great place to launch and grow a small business.

Regional organizations such as the local Small Business and Technology Development Center, the Inventors Network, and the Central Piedmont Community College's Center for Entrepreneurship supply a mix of mentoring, networking and technical assistance to innovative entrepreneurs, especially those in the finance and technology fields. To help develop the city's biotech industry, a research complex sponsored in part by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is set to open its labs this year to scientists and startups involved in healthcare and nutrition research.

Charlotte's vibrancy and employment opportunities attract young professionals from around the state and help the city retain many of the graduates streaming out of 19 nearby colleges and universities. More here about the Article

2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for WHITEWATER SLALOM event in Charlotte

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Whitewater Slalom is expected to bring over 130 athletes to the U.S. National Whitewater Center over three days.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Whitewater Slalom is the second of three competitions where U.S. paddlers can earn points towards selection to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. U.S. paddlers began accumulating points at the 2007 World Championships and will conclude the selection process at the Prague World Cup in June.
The U.S., which has secured 2008 Olympic berths in the men's and women's single kayak events, will be vying for slots in the men's single and double canoe. Canada, which has 2008 Olympic Games berths wrapped-up in the men's and women's single kayak, will also be vying for slots in the men's single and double canoes.
These competitions will be held simultaneously in one seamless spectator event. The races themselves will take place from 11am - 4pm each day, Friday April 25 - Sunday, April 27.

SPORT Description

In Slalom Racing, paddlers have to navigate the kayak or canoe through pairs of poles, called "gates", set up over the challenging rapids, waves, eddies and currents on a stretch of rough water. If the paddler touches one of the poles, or misses a gate altogether, penalty times are added to the time achieved by the competitor on that run. They are single kayak (K) events, for men and women, and canoe events, also for men and women, in single (C1) and double boats (C2). There are also team events.
This discipline made its appearance in the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and then had to wait until 1992 to be reinstated to the Olympic program.

Popular index from Standard & Poor's and Case-Shiller found Charlotte to have the highest gain in fourth-quarter housing prices among the 20 cities tracked.

The Queen City’s home prices increased by 2.3 percent during the fourth quarter of 2007.  Besides Charlotte, who had gains in housing prices, only Portland, Ore., and Seattle followed.

Overall, home prices in the 20 large metro markets (measured by the S&P/Case-Shiller) fell 8.9 percent - the largest decline in the index's 20-year history.

Miami was the hardest hit city, with a year-over-year decline of 17.5 percent. Housing prices in both Las Vegas and Phoenix dropped 15.3 percent.

Lufthansa Increases Charlotte Capacity Nearly 40% this Summer

A340-600 aircraft will be largest plane serving Charlotte-Douglas International

February 14, 2008 - Lufthansa today announced that due to increased customer demand, it will upgrade capacity by nearly 40 percent on its Charlotte-Munich route this summer, deploying the world's longest aircraft, the Airbus A340-600. The 306-seat plane will be the largest to serve Charlotte-Douglas International on a scheduled basis when it makes its inaugural flight on June 8, and will offer passengers some new and familiar comforts, including: new ergonomically-designed Economy Class seats; a staircase at the rear of the plane leading to five lower level washrooms and a galley; Lufthansa's lie-flat Business Class seats as well as the only First Class cabin between Charlotte and Europe.

"In the four years since Lufthansa inaugurated service to Charlotte, this market has seen a steady increase in passengers, thanks to continued economic growth throughout the Carolinas," said Johannes Fuchs, District Sales Manager for Lufthansa in Charlotte. "This demand is especially significant during the summer months, when many families use our service for vacations in Europe, or to visit friends and family," Fuchs added.

The A340-600 will offer three-classes of service, including eight First Class seats, 60 lie-flat Business Class seats and 238 Economy Class seats compared with 8 First Class, 48 Business Class and 165 Economy Class seats with the current A340-300 used on the route.

Nicknamed "the whispering giant," Lufthansa's A340-600 is equipped with Rolls Royce Trent 500 engines which are not only extremely powerful, but also immensely quiet and fuel-efficient. Passengers inside the cabin will immediately notice lower noise levels - as will those outside the airport. For example, the A340-600 reduces the noise footprint - or surface area that experiences a maximum noise level during take-off -- to 85-decibels over 1.35 square miles, compared with 5.6 miles from a Boeing 747-200. 85 decibels is the equivalent of a truck in city traffic passing through a distance of 15 feet.

A growing number of customers are selecting Lufthansa's Charlotte - Munich service to benefit from convenient 30-minute connections to more than 90 destinations throughout Germany, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East that are available via Lufthansa's extensive network at Munich Airport. The Airport, which a survey of international travelers has named "Best Airport in Europe" three years running and the fourth best airport worldwide, boasts the state-of-the-art, awarding-winning Terminal 2. Co-owned by Lufthansa and the Munich Airport Authority, T2 features Lufthansa's exclusive First Class lounge, which opened in summer 2007 and offers personal assistants, a gourmet restaurant, dedicated check-in facilities, luxury bathrooms, a cigar lounge, chauffeured transfers to flights, among other premium amenities.

From Munich, passengers can also access Lufthansa Private Jet, an exclusive service providing premium travelers with seamless transfers by private jet to more than 1,000 airports around Europe, Israel and the Russian Federation.

One of the world's largest airlines, Lufthansa flies to 192 destinations in 78 countries, including 22 North American gateways, as of April 2008. Lufthansa has hubs in Munich, Frankfurt, and, with its 2005 acquisition of SWISS into its portfolio, Zurich. Together with its partners, Lufthansa serves 416 destinations in approximately 100 countries. An industry innovator, Lufthansa has long been committed to environment protection and sustainability, operating the most technically-advanced and fuel-efficient fleet in the world. Lufthansa will be the largest European operator of the Airbus A380 and the launch customer for the new Boeing 747-8, the industries' two most fuel-efficient passenger aircraft.
