Home sales dipped in the Charlotte area in September

Contracts on homes, condos and townhouses fell about 3 percent from the same month last year. Monthly sales increases have been easing for the past year, but this is the first time sales have fallen. The average home sold through Carolina Multiple Listing Services in September stayed on the market 113 days, but I spotted an interesting contradiction in the figures. Overall sales slowed, but more than half the homes sold last month -- 52 percent -- closed in 90 days or fewer. That's better than September of last year, when 42 percent sold in 90 days or fewer. Also, the number of houses that lingered on the market longer than 121 days actually fell by 22 percent. In this case, down is good news. What does it all portend? Probably that the experts have been right: Charlotte's home sales and prices had been rising moderately, so any slowdown will be moderate, too. The average sale price was about the same.
